Foxy Digitalis review of “Aphasia”

Ryan Gregory Tallman, “Aphasia” tape
June 1, 2012 By Travis Bird

Ryan Gregory Tallman’s Aphasia is described as a “binaural/psychoacoustic perception study of droning sine wave frequencies.” Much of the Mills College alum’s work is said to be “site-specific and experiential,” but there’s nothing online suggesting that Aphasia is so. This leaves nothing but what is there – four extremely minimal, static sine wave pieces with some subtle harmonic interactions. These are based mostly on low tones with occasional other registers present. Literally nothing else, although the presence of cassette tape hiss is especially noticeable and forces one to contemplate the physical medium. Not a lot there, but what is there is quite pleasant and immersive. Tallman appears to be very active as an electroacoustic composer at the moment, so this is just one of many pieces circulating on a variety of labels.
