I’ve been diligently working on a new FIGHTS MONSTERS record, “Surfaces.” To my ears, it seems to be a culmination, or amalgamation, of all of the different modes of composing and recording that I’ve worked with ever since I got my first Tascam Portastudio for Christmas when I was 16: field recordings, ambient textures, noise, drone, My Bloody Valentine style shoegaze, industrial, and of course, metal. I’ve had a few days of distance from it; but listening back to some of the tracks it seems to be a sonic middle ground between early Swans and Yellow Swans. I’m thinking that it is sort of “Ambient Metal”—something that can either be listened to intensely or serve merely as a background Metal soundtrack to one’s everyday activates. It doesn’t seem to demand attention; but if given attention there is potential payoff. OK, maybe I’m a little biased. Back to work; there is much to be done. In the meantime, here are a couple of the unfinished tracks:
Surface I
Surface II
Surface I is nice. There are some interesting melodies bubbling away beneath the noisy surface.
